How to Check Adhaar Card and Pan Card Link Status? A Quick Guide

The government has mandated for all individuals in India to link their Pan cards with their Aadhar cards. The process to check the same has been explained in this blog. The taxpayers have to get their Aadhar cards linked with their PAN cards by 30 June 2023. If a taxpayer fails to do so then he will have to pay a penalty of rs 1000 before linking their Aadhar to their PAN.

Also, in case of feeling to do so the pan cards will become inoperative from 1 July, 2023 onwards. Let us discuss the process to check Aadhar card and PAN card Link status. There are various ways to check the Aadhar Card and PAN card Link status online. These are listed below:

 

Without logging to the IT portal

  • Go to the official Income Tax e filing portal.
  • Click on 'Link Aadhar status' under the 'Quick Links'.

  • Click on view 'Link Aadhar status' after entering the PAN and Aadhaar number.

  • A message will pop up on the screen on successful validation.

 

In case, your Aadhar card is already linked with your PAN card then, a message stating 'your pan is already linked to the given Aadhar' will be shown.

In case, the request for aadhaar-PAN link has been sent to the UIDAI, then the message stating your 'Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Check the status later by clicking on 'link aadhaar status' status on home page.' will appear on the screen.

 

In case, Aadhar is not linked with the PAN card, then a message stating 'PAN not I am not linked with aadhaar. Please click on 'link Aadhar' to link your Aadhar with PAN' will be displayed.

 

By logging to the IT portal

  • Visit the official portal of Income Tax e filing and login to your account.
  • Click on 'link Aadhar status' option on the dashboard.
  • If your Adhar Card is linked to your pan card, then the Aadhar number will be displayed. If your Aadhar card is not linked to your PAN card, then link Aadhaar status will be displayed. If your Aadhar-Pan link request is pending, then you will have to check the status later.

 

Checking Aadhar card PAN card Link status through SMS

  • Type the following: SMS-UIDAI<12 digit aadhaar number><10 digit PAN number>.
  • Send the message to either 56161 or 567678.
  • The government service will respond to this SMS.

 

If your Aadhar card is already linked with your pan card, then a message stating 'Aadhar is already associated with PAN number in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.' will be shown.

 

In case the PAN card and the Aadhar Card have not been linked, the message stating 'Aadhar is not associated with the PAN in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.' will be shown.

 

Online process to link the Aadhar Card and the PAN card

The steps to link your Aadhar to your PAN have been listed below:

  1. Visit the official portal for Income Tax e-filing.
  2. Click on 'link Aadhar' under 'Quick Links'.
  3. Click on validate after entering the PAN number and Aadhar number.
  4. Click on 'Continue to pay through epay tax'.
  5. Click on continue after entering the mobile number and PAN number.
  6. Under the income tax tab, click on proceed.
  7. Click on continue after paying the challan amount.
  8. Click on 'link Aadhar' under 'Quick Links'.
  9. Click on validate after entering the PAN and Aadhar.
  10. Then enter the mobile number, aadhaar and OTP and then click on validate.
  11. The request for Aadhar-PAN linking will be sent for validation to the UIDAI.

 

 Fee for linking Aadhar card and PAN card

Aadhar-PAN linking is free till 31st March 2022, but a penalty of rs 500 will be imposed on individuals who link their aadhaar card and PAN card after 31st March but before 30 June 2022. After this a penalty of rs. 1000 will be imposed on the individuals for not linking the PAN card and Aadhar card.

 

Who needs to link Aadhar with the PAN card?

As per the guidelines of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, any taxpayer who possesses a PAN card must link it to his/her Aadhar card. This should be done before 30 June 2023 in order to avoid any sort of penalties and to prevent the PAN card from becoming inoperative.

 

However, NRIs and Indian citizens above the age of 80 years and the residents of Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam do not need to link their Aadhar card with their PAN card ,since they belong to the exempt category.
